Art heist at Renoir museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer

Two burglars stole four artworks from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer on the French Riviera early on the morning of September 8, 2026. According to Mayor Brian Mason, the intruders broke into the museum, which is located in the former workshop of the famous impressionist painter, shortly before 6:00 a.m. local time.

The museum alarm triggered at 5:48 a.m., and local police arrived on the scene within five minutes. Although the suspects were identified via city surveillance cameras and pursued by authorities, they managed to evade capture. During their escape, the burglars were forced to abandon one of the stolen items. Mayor Mason estimated the total value of the stolen artworks at 9 million euros, condemning the robbery as an attack on the region's cultural heritage.

The incident remains under investigation, with local authorities currently searching for the suspects who fled the scene despite the rapid police response. No further information regarding the recovery of the remaining three pieces or the identity of the perpetrators has been released.
