Analysis of trends in the Cypriot education sector

Recent data from the Cypriot Ministry of Education for the 2026-2027 school year highlights a significant discrepancy between student population growth and the number of teachers employed. Secondary education currently serves 41,280 students with 7,200 teachers, compared to 40,000 students and 6,015 teachers a decade ago. This indicates that while the student body increased by approximately 3%, the teaching workforce expanded by about 20%, or 1,185 staff members. A similar trend is observed in primary education, which will host 52,186 students this year.

Contrasting this local expansion, Eurostat data from 2024 shows that primary education in Cyprus had 60,596 students with a ratio of 11.5 pupils per teacher, which is notably lower than the European Union average of 13.3. This ratio in Cyprus has improved from 13.6 in 2014. Across the EU, the total number of primary school students reached 23.2 million in 2024. While local commentators question the efficiency of the teacher-to-student ratio increases in Cyprus, the EU-wide context suggests that Cyprus maintains a relatively favorable teacher-per-student density compared to its European counterparts.
