Vehicle blocking accessibility ramp at the Cypriot Parliament sparks outrage

On September 8, 2026, an incident occurred at the Cypriot Parliament where a vehicle was parked directly on an accessibility ramp, preventing entry for individuals with disabilities. The President of the Cyprus Confederation of Organizations of the Disabled (KYSOA), Themis Anthopoulou, reported that she and another woman, Paola Frantzi, were forced to wait outside in the sun to attend a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Committee because the entrance was obstructed. When the driver eventually returned to move his car, he justified the illegal parking by stating that he could not find another space.

The incident gained significant public attention after Anthopoulou shared the experience on social media. In response to the backlash, the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, issued an official statement condemning the behavior. Demetriou stated that she has instructed the General Directorate of the Parliament to take all necessary measures to ensure that such an event does not recur, emphasizing the importance of accessibility and respect for public infrastructure for persons with disabilities.
