British base police appeal for witnesses regarding fatal accident on Limassol-Paphos highway

British base authorities are seeking public assistance following a fatal traffic accident that occurred on September 2, 2026, on the Limassol-Paphos highway, approximately one kilometer past the Episkopi tunnel. The victim, 76-year-old Demetris Potamitis, died after being struck by a passing minibus while attempting to retrieve a refrigerator that had fallen from his vehicle onto the road. Potamitis had been traveling with his grandson, who remained uninjured during the incident.

The driver of the minibus, which was transporting passengers toward Paphos airport, was initially arrested following the collision. Authorities conducted alcohol and drug tests on the driver, both of which returned negative results. He was subsequently released pending the conclusion of an ongoing police investigation. The collision occurred in the westbound lanes as the victim exited his vehicle to clear the appliance from the carriageway.
