Cyprus records historic rainfall levels during summer 2026

Cyprus experienced one of its wettest summers in decades in 2026, with total seasonal rainfall reaching 327% of the long-term average. According to the independent forecaster KitasWeather, the average summer precipitation reached 37.6 mm, significantly exceeding the historical norm of 11.5 mm. June saw localized storms, while July featured intense instability between July 5 and 8, highlighted by a record-breaking 100.3 mm of rain in Agros on July 7.

August 2026 set a new historic record as the wettest August since observations began in 1902, according to the Department of Meteorology. Average rainfall for the month reached 30 mm, which is 1,034% of the usual 2.9 mm. A critical weather event between August 28 and 30 contributed 22.5 mm to this total, with August 29 being particularly impactful. The heavy downpours led to increased water flow into reservoirs, including Kouris, and caused mountain rivers to swell across the island.

This summer's extreme weather surpassed the previous August record set in 1971 (20.6 mm) by approximately 46%. Meteorologists attribute the August results to a combination of atmospheric conditions, specifically a weak barometric low south of the island.
