Cyprus evaluates expansion of national cat sterilization program

The Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, led by Elias Myrianthous, announced plans to expand the national cat sterilization program starting this October. The initiative aims to enhance efforts to control the stray cat population, with officials also exploring the possibility of microchipping cats simultaneously during the sterilization process.

These developments were discussed during a meeting held on September 8, 2026, between Commissioner Myrianthous and representatives from the Veterinary Services, including First Veterinary Officer Ioannis Ioannou, Veterinary Officer Elias Pantechis, and Deputy Veterinary Officer at the Commissioner’s Office, Elena Georgiou. The meeting addressed a broad range of animal welfare issues, such as the enforcement of dog microchipping, management of abandoned animals, and the authorization of volunteers for Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) actions.

Furthermore, participants reviewed the interconnection of electronic registration systems for dogs and discussed operational standards for temporary holding facilities, shelters, and pet boarding establishments. The Commissioner’s office is currently evaluating the allocation of additional resources to support these expanded measures, signaling an ongoing effort to improve animal protection across the country.
