West Nile virus cases reported in Cyprus and occupied areas

Health authorities on both sides of the island have ramped up efforts to combat the spread of the West Nile virus as of September 8, 2026. In the occupied areas, the "health ministry" confirmed three active cases; two patients were hospitalized following symptoms of respiratory infection, fever, and fatigue, while a third asymptomatic individual tested positive during routine blood tests. All three patients are currently in stable condition and under close medical supervision.

In response to the growing threat, the Larnaca municipality in the Republic of Cyprus has issued urgent warnings to residents, emphasizing the need to eliminate stagnant water sources where mosquitoes breed. Similarly, the Nicosia "municipality" in the occupied areas has deployed seven specialized teams to conduct inspections and perform widespread spraying. Officials, including Nicosia "mayor" Mehmet Harmanci, have stressed that mosquito control is a shared responsibility that transcends administrative boundaries, focusing on clearing potential breeding grounds such as sewers, tanks, and wastewater treatment plants near Mia Milia.
