Polish national sentenced for causing fire in Epanomi

On September 8, 2026, the Thessaloniki Single-Member Misdemeanor Court sentenced a 40-year-old Polish national to an eight-month suspended prison term. The man was charged with causing a fire through negligence while conducting an outdoor barbecue in the Epanomi area.

The fire, which consumed 39 square meters of dry grass, required intervention from the local fire brigade to extinguish. During his testimony, the defendant expressed indifference toward the court's verdict and claimed he was unaware of the fire risk or the regulations prohibiting outdoor barbecues. He stated he had been in Greece for only one week and was not informed about the ongoing fire situation in the country. He further argued that the proximity of the sea and a nearby road minimized the potential danger of the fire spreading.
