Maria Angela Holguin cancels travel to New York and Cyprus due to health reasons

United Nations Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, has canceled her scheduled visits to both New York and Cyprus due to health reasons. UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric officially confirmed the cancellations on September 8, 2026, noting that the envoy is currently unable to fulfill her travel plans.

Despite the travel cancellations, Dujarric stated that Holguin remains in close contact with the leadership of both sides in Cyprus and their respective representatives. To maintain progress on her mandate, she will conduct a telephone consultation with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to provide an update on her ongoing efforts regarding the Cyprus issue. The planned in-person meeting in New York has been replaced by this remote briefing.

The situation remains in a state of adjustment as the envoy recovers. While the physical visits have been postponed, the UN confirmed that her diplomatic engagement remains active through remote communication. There are currently no announcements regarding the rescheduling of her physical presence in the region or at the UN headquarters.
