Egypt to participate in Cyprus independence day military parade for the first time

For the first time in history, an Egyptian military detachment will participate in the October 1st military parade in Nicosia, Cyprus, to mark the anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus' independence. This unprecedented decision was confirmed by President Nikos Christodoulides following consultations between the Cypriot National Guard and the Egyptian Ministry of Defense.

The participation serves as a high-level symbolic gesture reflecting the deepening strategic alliance between Egypt and Cyprus, particularly in the sectors of defense and regional security in the Eastern Mediterranean. The move occurs against the backdrop of a recent trilateral meeting in El Alamein, where leaders of Cyprus, Greece, and Egypt reaffirmed their cooperation despite ongoing regional shifts and Turkey's diplomatic efforts to integrate Cairo into the so-called 'Mecca Alliance' alongside Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

Historically, bilateral relations reached a low point in February 1978 following a failed operation by Egyptian commandos at Larnaca airport. The current deployment signifies that, despite Cairo's recent diplomatic rapprochement with Ankara, its strategic alignment with Nicosia and Athens remains robust.
