Egypt to participate in Cyprus independence parade for the first time

For the first time in history, the Egyptian Armed Forces will participate in the military parade marking the independence of the Republic of Cyprus on October 1, 2026. A platoon of Egyptian soldiers is scheduled to march alongside the Cypriot military in Nicosia, serving as a symbolic gesture to highlight the deepening cooperation between the two nations in the fields of defense and regional security.

This development occurs nearly 49 years after the nadir of diplomatic relations between the two countries in February 1978, which followed a failed Egyptian commando operation at Larnaca Airport. The decision to participate in the parade follows recent high-level trilateral talks held in El Alamein between Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The leaders discussed regional developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, affirming their commitment to a joint cooperation agenda despite shifting regional dynamics and the upgrade of Turkish-Egyptian relations.
