Allegations of police cooperation with criminal elements regarding system data breaches

A complaint has surfaced regarding alleged cooperation between police officers and criminal elements, involving the unauthorized use of the Cyprus Police's telecommunications and information systems to retrieve sensitive data. The complaint was submitted to the Authority Against Corruption, but it was subsequently rejected because it was anonymous and investigators were unable to contact the complainant for further evidence or clarification.

Nikos Loizidis, president of the ISOTITA police branch, noted that approximately 35% to 40% of reports against police officers are under daily investigation. He explained that there are internal security protocols in place to monitor usage, as each officer is issued two unique credentials to access computers and the police database. These credentials leave electronic footprints, allowing the force's leadership to track which specific member accessed the system and what actions were performed.

While this incident follows a history of similar reports regarding unauthorized data access and potential leaks to third parties, the authorities maintain that the existing system infrastructure provides sufficient safeguards to identify internal security breaches. Criminal and disciplinary investigations into such conduct remain an ongoing concern for the force.
