Egyptian military to join Cyprus Independence Day parade

For the first time in history, Egyptian armed forces personnel will participate in the Cyprus Independence Day military parade on October 1. The Egyptian contingent is scheduled to march alongside the National Guard and Greek officers from Eldyk to commemorate the island's independence from British colonial rule.

This decision follows a series of high-level diplomatic engagements aimed at deepening the strategic partnership between Cyprus and Egypt. In April 2026, the two nations reached an agreement to enhance defense cooperation, which includes expanded collaboration between military academies and defense industries, as well as the formation of a joint committee to manage shared security challenges. These ties were further reaffirmed during President Nikos Christodoulides’ recent visit to El-Alamein.

Cypriot government spokesperson Sofia Iosif characterized the move as a significant symbolic gesture that reflects the maturity of bilateral relations. The participation serves as a public demonstration of the countries' unified approach to regional security, marking a shift toward closer military integration.
