Odysseas Michaelides outlines ALMA movement's stance on 2028 presidential elections

Odysseas Michaelides, head of the ALMA movement, has clarified that the party will not support any candidate linked to existing political parties in the upcoming 2028 presidential elections in Cyprus. During recent media appearances, Michaelides emphasized that the movement is internally evaluating potential candidates who represent the reform-oriented values for which ALMA was established. He explicitly ruled out backing Andreas Mavroyiannis, acknowledging his 2023 campaign but stating that he has become too closely associated with partisan politics to meet ALMA's criteria.

Michaelides launched sharp criticism against the administration of President Nikos Christodoulides, describing it as suffering from poor governance and indicating that it must come to an end. While the movement prefers an independent candidate capable of securing broad support, it has not ruled out the possibility of running its own candidate or acting autonomously. Internal discussions regarding potential contenders are underway, though no names have been disclosed. Meanwhile, other political actors, including DIKO led by Nikolas Papadopoulos, are also assessing their strategies for the 2028 contest, with approximately 500 days remaining until the elections. The political landscape is becoming increasingly active as parties begin to deliberate on alliances and future leadership roles.
