Odysseas Michaelides outlines ALMA movement's strategy for future presidential elections

Odysseas Michaelides, head of the ALMA movement, has announced that the party will not support any partisan candidate in the upcoming presidential elections. During recent media appearances, Michaelides emphasized that ALMA is seeking an independent candidate capable of championing reforms, explicitly ruling out figures linked to existing political parties or traditional political machinery.

Regarding Andreas Mavroyiannis, who is expected to announce his candidacy before the end of the year, Michaelides dismissed the possibility of ALMA’s support. While acknowledging his performance in the 2023 elections, Michaelides stated that Mavroyiannis is now too closely identified with specific political factions, particularly AKEL, to meet ALMA's criteria for an independent candidate. The movement is prioritizing a candidate who can gather broad support across different political and social spheres.

Furthermore, Michaelides launched a harsh critique of the current administration, stating that the government of Nikos Christodoulides must be brought to an end due to perceived instances of mismanagement. While internal discussions regarding potential candidates have begun, the movement is in no rush to reach a final decision, emphasizing that it is currently too early for definitive scenarios regarding their own platform or potential coalitions.
