Cyprus Consumers Association reports significant fuel price disparities and rising costs

A recent study by the Cyprus Consumers Association has highlighted significant regional variations in fuel prices and a sharp rise in costs for households and drivers. Analyzing data from 2023 to 2026, the association identified that Paphos consistently recorded the highest average prices for 95-octane petrol, diesel, and heating oil. Conversely, Nicosia generally maintained the lowest average prices, although it also exhibited the largest fluctuation between maximum and minimum retail rates.

Between March 1 and September 8, 2026—a period coinciding with the latest conflict in the Middle East—fuel prices surged significantly. Specifically, 95-octane petrol rose by 31.6 cents, diesel by 47.7 cents, and heating oil by 56.2 cents per litre. This escalation resulted in an estimated additional financial burden of €23 million for consumers, including approximately €4 million in associated VAT. The association has called for a deeper investigation into how retail fuel prices are structured across different districts to ensure transparency and fairness.

The association emphasized that these findings warrant a comprehensive probe into regional pricing policies. While the analysis is complete, the group continues to highlight the ongoing pressure these price hikes exert on family budgets across Cyprus.
