Cyprus government unveils new housing schemes for families and mountain regions

The government of Cyprus has announced two major housing initiatives to address affordability and demographic challenges. The first scheme provides approximately 570 state-owned plots at 25% of their market value to eligible Cypriot families, including couples with or without children and single-parent households, provided they meet specific age and residency criteria. A second initiative allows existing homeowners to construct an additional floor or secondary dwelling on their property to house family members, with a maximum buildable area of 150 square meters, or up to 180 square meters on larger plots, provided the original structure is legal.

Furthermore, President Nikos Christodoulides announced an upcoming housing program specifically tailored for mountain communities in the Troodos and Tillyria regions. This project aims to support the government's decade-long goal of doubling the population of these areas from 32,000 to 64,000 residents. Concurrently, the administration has transferred the supervision of common-use buildings to Provincial Organizations of Self-Government (EOA) to improve administrative oversight and compliance with building regulations. Applications for the state plot scheme are expected to follow a two-month submission period once specific locations are published, with lottery systems in place for oversubscribed areas.
