Justice Minister pledges investigation into police misconduct allegations

Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fytiris announced on Tuesday that all allegations concerning police collusion with criminal elements will be investigated. The statement follows a report in the newspaper Politis, which detailed complaints that certain officers allegedly assisted criminals in accessing the police’s internal telecommunications and information systems to retrieve sensitive data.

The Independent Anti-Corruption Authority noted that while it initially dismissed the specific complaint due to its anonymous nature—stating the alleged conduct did not strictly meet the legal criteria for corruption—the government remains committed to internal oversight. Minister Fytiris emphasized that the police force requires reform, noting that over ten officers have been suspended within the last six months for breaching their oath of office. He confirmed that any officer convicted of wrongdoing will face dismissal.

While the specific anonymous complaint has been set aside by the Authority for lack of actionable information, the Minister maintains that the police department will continue to pursue investigations into any reports of misconduct to maintain institutional integrity.
