Cyprus parliamentary committee investigates chronic marine pollution in Limassol

The Cyprus parliamentary Environment Committee convened on September 9, 2026, to address recurring marine pollution off the coast of Limassol. Lawmakers criticized the persistent environmental degradation, which officials attribute to four primary sources: land-based industrial and sewage drainage, stationary marine installations like fish farms and desalination plants, commercial shipping, and recreational vessels. Despite the government's previous efforts to improve oversight, legislators expressed frustration, citing 300 recorded incidents and questioning why state monitoring shows clear water while local authorities, such as the Mayor of Limassol, reported intestinal bacterial contamination in samples taken on August 11.

To address this, the Deputy Ministry of Shipping has introduced a new governance framework organized around seven action axes. The plan aims to end the fragmentation of responsibilities by enforcing strict accountability and transparency across state agencies. Short-term measures, including increased water quality monitoring at 29 locations, are scheduled for implementation throughout 2026, with medium-term goals set for 2027. Although the Department of Environment has initiated fines for unauthorized discharges, officials admit that current penalties are insufficient to resolve the complex, long-standing issue. The committee demanded full disclosure of pollution sources and plans to reconvene shortly to verify progress.
