Annita Demetriou calls for strategic government commitment to the Great Sea Interconnector

On September 9, 2026, the President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), Annita Demetriou, held a press conference calling on the Cypriot government to end its hesitation and adopt a clear, definitive stance regarding the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI). Demetriou emphasized that the project has reached a critical juncture, supported by significant international investment interest and the active involvement of Greece, France, and the United States.

Demetriou argued that the GSI is essential for ending Cyprus's energy isolation, ensuring long-term supply, and reducing costs for consumers. She criticized the current government for its perceived indecisiveness, noting that while the party does not object to additional studies, these must not serve as pretexts for further delays. The project is tied to a European grant of €658 million, which depends on the successful evaluation of the infrastructure's viability.

Looking ahead, the DISY leader announced her intention to pursue high-level contacts in Athens and Brussels, as well as cooperation with other domestic political forces, to secure the project's future. She highlighted that energy security remains a core pillar for national growth and security, particularly as electricity consumption in the region is projected to rise significantly.
