Cyprus government urged to finalize support for Great Sea Interconnector
On September 9, 2026, the leader of the Democratic Rally party (DISY), Annita Demetriou, called on the Cypriot government to move from ambiguity to a clear strategic commitment regarding the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project. The initiative, which seeks to connect the electricity grids of Cyprus and Greece, is currently facing a new momentum driven by the entry of the French investment firm Meridiam as a majority shareholder and increased interest from Greece, France, and the United States.
Demetriou emphasized that the project is crucial for ending Cyprus's energy isolation, ensuring long-term supply, and lowering consumer costs. Figures cited by party officials suggest that if the project were operational, the Cypriot economy could see annual savings of up to €184 million based on price differentials. The European Union has previously linked the project's progress to a €658 million grant.
President Nikos Christodoulides responded that the project is at its most advanced stage since its inception in 2012, confirming that discussions are ongoing with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and French President Emmanuel Macron. Following a recent trilateral summit in Cairo, diplomatic efforts continue to solidify the project's financial and geopolitical framework, with further talks held between the Cypriot diplomatic office and the French Embassy.
