Democratic Rally calls for decisive government action on Great Sea Interconnector

On September 9, 2026, Annita Demetriou, President of the Democratic Rally (DISY) party in Cyprus, held a press conference urging the government to move beyond ambiguity and inertia regarding the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project. She criticized the government’s inconsistent stance and called for a clear, strategic commitment to the underwater electricity cable linking Cyprus with Greece.

Demetriou highlighted that the project is gaining new momentum through the involvement of international investors, interest in a potential Cyprus-Israel connection, and active support from Greece, France, and the United States. She argued that the GSI is essential for ensuring energy security, lowering costs for consumers, and enhancing Cyprus's geopolitical role. While acknowledging the potential need for further assessments, she warned that these must not be used as excuses for stalling, noting that the European Union has already linked the project’s viability to a €658 million grant.

The DISY leader announced her intention to conduct high-level contacts in Athens and Brussels to advocate for the project. She emphasized that the current government must stop relying on excuses and prioritize the strategic infrastructure necessary to end the nation's energy isolation.
