President Christodoulides signals progress on the Great Sea Interconnector project

Following intense political pressure, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed on September 9, 2026, that the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) electricity link between Cyprus and Greece is approaching the implementation stage. Annita Demetriou, leader of the opposition party DISY, had previously demanded an end to government indecision and ambiguity, highlighting the project's strategic necessity for energy security. Christodoulides noted that the entry of the French investment firm Meridiam has been a decisive factor, effectively moving the project forward after years of delays since its inception in 2012.

International interest in the GSI remains high, with Greece, France, and the United States involved in discussions regarding its realization. During a meeting in Paris, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and French President Emmanuel Macron reviewed the next steps for the project. The potential economic impact is significant, with projections suggesting Cyprus could have saved approximately 184 million euros in one year had the link been operational.
