Recent wildfires across Paphos and Nicosia districts

On September 8 and 9, 2026, several wildfires broke out across Cyprus. A significant fire occurred near Atsas, between Evrychou and Koutrafas in the Nicosia district, burning two hectares of vegetation and damaging a storage facility before being controlled early on September 9. Simultaneously, the Paphos district faced multiple incidents, including a fire near Goudi that was contained by midday on September 9, and a blaze in the Fonias area near Panagia village that burned one hectare of abandoned agricultural land.

The Fonias fire, which started at 19:38 on September 9, involved a joint operation by the Forestry Department, the Fire Service, and local volunteers from Panagia. A total of 25 forestry personnel and five fire service members used seven vehicles to contain the blaze by 22:00. While no human casualties or threat to residential areas were reported in these incidents, local authorities remain on high alert. The causes of the fires are currently under investigation, and crews continue to monitor affected sites for potential flare-ups.
