Series of wildfire incidents reported across Cyprus

Multiple wildfires occurred across Cyprus between September 9 and 10, 2026, requiring intervention from the Department of Forests and the Fire Service. On the evening of September 9, a fire broke out in the 'Fonias' area near Panagia and Vretsia in the Paphos district. The blaze, which affected approximately one hectare of abandoned agricultural land, was brought under full control by 22:00 that night following a joint operation involving 25 forestry personnel and several fire vehicles, along with local volunteers.

On the following day, September 10, authorities responded to additional incidents. A fire at 'Lopatsa' near Pano Deftera in the Nicosia district was successfully contained, while a separate blaze occurred near the 'Alexigros' state forest in Klavdia, Larnaca. The latter was triggered by the illegal burning of refuse and was controlled within twenty minutes. Separately, a significant fire at 'Giofyri tis Natas' in Episkopi, Paphos, occurred on September 9, burning six decares of vegetation; investigations suggest this incident was caused by electrical sparks from Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) cables. Authorities continue to monitor affected areas to prevent flare-ups, and investigations into the causes of the remaining fires are ongoing.
