Series of wildfires contained across Cyprus districts
Firefighting services in Cyprus responded to several wildfires between September 8 and 9, 2026. On September 8, a fire occurred near Atsa, between Evrychou and Koutrafas in the Nicosia district. The blaze destroyed two hectares of dry grass and wild vegetation before being controlled at 01:46 on September 9; a small building containing timber was damaged, but a nearby concrete factory was saved.
In the Paphos district, several incidents were reported. On September 9, a fire at Goudi was controlled by 10:05. Later that day, a fire broke out at 17:15 in Episkopi, near the 'Giofyri tis Natas' area, burning six decares of vegetation; officials stated it was likely caused by sparks from electricity cables. Simultaneously, a fire was reported near the village of Panagia in the 'Fonias' area at approximately 19:38. This blaze burned about one hectare of abandoned agricultural land and was fully controlled by 22:00. Operations involved the Forestry Department, Fire Service, and local volunteers.
Authorities remained on high alert following these events. Investigation into the causes of the fires is ongoing, while fire crews conducted overnight surveillance to prevent flare-ups.
