Russian drone attack strikes Ukraine-Moldova border checkpoint
On the night of Wednesday, September 9, 2026, a Russian drone strike targeted the Starokozatske international border checkpoint located on the border between Ukraine and Moldova. The attack caused significant damage to the facility, resulting in the immediate suspension of its operations. Authorities have formally notified their counterparts in Moldova regarding the incident.
According to the head of the Odesa regional administration, Oleh Kiper, and the Ukrainian Border Guard Service, the preliminary death toll stands at two people, with three others sustaining injuries. The victims are reported to be civilians who were present at the checkpoint during the strike. The facility is situated approximately 70 kilometers from the Ukrainian city of Odesa and 130 kilometers from the Moldovan capital, Chisinau.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities assess the full extent of the damage. For now, the border crossing remains closed to traffic while officials determine when operations can resume safely.
