Diko confirms support for Nikos Christodoulides for 2028 presidential elections

Health Minister and Diko Vice President Neophytos Charalambides clarified on September 9, 2026, that the Democratic Party (Diko) is not searching for a presidential candidate for the 2028 elections. Speaking to the ANT1 program "Mera Mesimeri," Charalambides confirmed that the party maintains its full support for the incumbent President, Nikos Christodoulides, viewing him as their designated candidate for the upcoming election cycle.

Charalambides highlighted that the cooperation between Diko and the President is grounded in a specific governing program, which he claims is being implemented successfully. He dismissed speculation regarding a potential shift in strategy by party leader Nikolas Papadopoulos, stating that he has observed no signs of deviation or discussions about withdrawing from the current government coalition. The Minister also noted that the President recently expanded Diko's representation within the cabinet by adding two more ministers to the administration, reinforcing the strength of their political partnership.

Furthermore, the official emphasized that the party's primary focus remains the fulfillment of its "social contract" with citizens through its ministerial responsibilities. There is currently no internal dissent reported regarding the party's future in the government, and the leadership continues to prioritize the execution of the existing political agreement until the end of the term.
