Diko Health Minister affirms support for President Christodoulides in 2028 election
On September 9, 2026, Cypriot Minister of Health and Diko party vice-president, Neophytos Charalambides, publicly reaffirmed his party’s support for President Nikos Christodoulides in the upcoming 2028 presidential elections. Speaking on the Ant1 television program "Mera Mesimeri," Charalambides stated that Diko is not seeking another candidate, as the party is already committed to the current administration through a formal governing agreement. He emphasized that the president recently strengthened this alliance by appointing two additional ministers from Diko during a cabinet reshuffle last month.
Despite recent speculation from some media outlets and hints from Diko leader Nicholas Papadopoulos that the party's support for a second term might not be guaranteed, Charalambides insisted that there is no internal dissent regarding the government’s direction. He stated that he has not observed any attempts by the party leadership to explore alternative candidates, adding that the focus remains on implementing the agreed-upon socio-economic program. The Minister highlighted that with 18 months remaining before the election, the current priority is the successful execution of governmental policies, including advancements in foreign policy and social welfare, rather than premature electoral discussions.
