Tensions within Diko party over 2028 presidential candidacy

Public disagreement has surfaced within the Democratic Party (Diko) regarding support for President Nikos Christodoulides in the 2028 presidential elections. The dispute began when Health Minister and party vice-president Neophytos Charalambides declared that the party already has a candidate in the incumbent president, citing the successful implementation of their joint governing program. This position follows a cabinet reshuffle last month that saw Diko's ministerial representation increase.

Party leader Nicholas Papadopoulos and other senior officials, including Christiana Erotokritou and Chrysis Pantelides, reacted with visible frustration to these comments. Papadopoulos emphasized that no individual has the authority to preempt party processes and that all scenarios, including fielding a separate candidate or exploring other political alliances, remain on the table. Other party members, such as Lemesos municipal councilor Achilleas Leonidou, reinforced this by stating that the party must evaluate its coalition role through formal collective bodies rather than individual declarations.

Following these developments, a meeting of the Diko Secretariat with President Christodoulides is scheduled for Monday to discuss their cooperation and government stability. While Charalambides maintains that the current partnership is solid, the party leadership is focusing on internal discussions and provincial conferences to define its long-term electoral strategy, with officials insisting that the 2028 decision remains open.
