Greek Parliament to support children of pilots killed in air show crash

The Greek Parliament has initiated a process to provide financial support for the children of two Air Force pilots, Squadron Leader Ioannis Blesias and Flight Lieutenant Dimitrios Petrou, who died during a tragic crash at the Athens Flying Week 2026 air show in Tanagra on September 5, 2026.

Parliament President Nikitas Kaklamanis announced that the support process is underway as part of an established state practice to assist children of Armed Forces and Security Corps members killed in the line of duty. The relevant file is currently awaiting approval from the Court of Audit, with the formalization process expected to be completed within two months.

This policy provides ongoing financial assistance, similar to a recent case involving a Coast Guard officer killed in Astros Kynourias last June, where the child receives 10,000 euros annually until reaching the age of 25, totaling 170,000 euros. The government's decision aims to provide long-term stability for the bereaved families following the fatal accident that occurred during the public exhibition.
