Drug trafficking arrests in Cyprus involve large quantities of illicit substances

Police in Cyprus have conducted separate operations targeting drug trafficking, leading to multiple arrests. On September 8, 2026, authorities arrested a 20-year-old man from Israel at Larnaca Airport in connection with the importation of nearly 43 kilograms of khat found in unclaimed luggage dating back to February 2024. The suspect, who had been on a watch list, is currently being held on a five-day detention order issued by the Larnaca District Court.

In a separate, large-scale operation on September 12, 2026, the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) searched two residences in Limassol, resulting in the seizure of over 126 kilograms of ketamine concealed in paint containers. Four individuals—two couples from Israel and Palestine—were arrested. Further searches revealed smaller quantities of cocaine, MDMA, methedrone, and illicit cigarettes. While initial police reports erroneously suggested the seizure of over 100 kilograms of cocaine, subsequent verification identified the primary substance as 126.63 kilograms of ketamine. The suspects are currently in custody awaiting court hearings for remand orders as investigators continue to examine potential criminal networks.
