Justice Minister announces infrastructure and policy reforms for Cyprus

Cyprus Minister of Justice and Public Order, Konstantinos Fytiris, recently outlined several key administrative and structural initiatives scheduled for completion by the end of 2026 and 2027. A primary focus is the implementation of the "Red Flag" platform, an inter-agency system designed to coordinate responses to gender-based violence, harassment, and threats against vulnerable individuals. While originally approved in 2021, the digital tool aims to ensure real-time information sharing between authorities to prevent escalations, with a launch date now set for the end of 2026.

In addition to digital reforms, the ministry is addressing prison overcrowding through the construction of a new, modernized correctional facility. Fytiris indicated that negotiations for the site are down to three options, with construction expected to commence by the end of 2027. The project, which faces significant bureaucratic hurdles involving the Ministry of Finance and the Planning Directorate, will function as a closed-type institution. The minister also discussed the housing of a national investigative body, often referred to as the "Cypriot FBI," and a broader re-evaluation of police security protocols currently provided to political figures.
