Singapore prime minister announces salary increase for government officials

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that the salaries of the country's government ministers will increase effective October 15, 2026. This move marks the first upward adjustment in 15 years. Under the new pay structure, the prime minister's annual compensation will rise from 2.2 million to 3.6 million Singapore dollars (approximately 2.85 million US dollars). This salary package, which includes both fixed and variable components, significantly exceeds the compensation of most world leaders, including the President of the United States.

Addressing parliament, Wong acknowledged the sensitivity of this increase, noting the disparity between political salaries and the average monthly income of a Singaporean worker, which was 5,775 Singapore dollars in 2025. The government justifies the high pay as a necessary measure to attract top talent and deter corruption. To mitigate public concern, Wong pledged to donate the entire value of his personal salary increase to charity for the next five years, provided he remains in office. The administration maintains that these adjustments are essential for long-term governance, despite the significant public interest and scrutiny surrounding the decision.
