Wildlife authorities monitor competition between Cypriot mouflons

On September 9, 2026, the Cyprus Game and Fauna Service released footage showing two mature male mouflons with their horns locked together while attempting to access water. These animals frequently engage in dominance battles as autumn approaches, utilizing their large horns to assert status within their herds. While most confrontations are standard behavioral displays, the animals sometimes become physically trapped, which can be fatal if they are unable to separate.

Historically, authorities have discovered deceased mouflons in ravines that were unable to disentangle themselves following such encounters. In cases where the service is notified in time, officials intervene to safely separate the animals and release them back into the wild. In the recently documented incident, the two mouflons were observed cooperating to move together, eventually managing to free themselves on their own and safely accessing water.
