Internal disputes and election scheduling within EDEK party

The EDEK party in Cyprus is experiencing significant internal friction regarding the management of its membership registry and the scheduling of upcoming congresses. Following an Extraordinary Pan-Cyprian Congress held on July 5, a five-member committee was tasked with reviewing the registry, lifting member expulsions, and setting dates for future conventions. Tensions escalated during recent election preparations, with members of the Central Election Committee, specifically Anastasiou and Theodoulou, reporting that they lacked access to critical minutes from the Central Committee.

Disputes have also arisen regarding the presence of observers at polling centers, with conflicting views from figures such as Giorgos Kouttoukis, Sofia Christodoulou Makri, and Kyriakos Mavronikolas. Despite these internal procedural challenges, the five-member committee, chaired by newly elected president Sofia Christodoulou Makri, has scheduled the Statutory Congress for October 11 and the Electoral Congress for December 13. These dates were officially announced by committee member Nikos Nikolaidis, though the decision has met with sharp opposition from elements of the party leadership who control the organizational apparatus.
