Internal disputes and new leadership developments at EDEK

Following the election of Sofia Christodoulou Makri as the new president of the Cypriot party EDEK, the organization faces internal tension regarding its electoral registry and succession procedures. Members of the Central Supervisory Committee, specifically Anastasiou and Theodoulou, reported a lack of access to key committee minutes, while disagreements emerged regarding the presence of observers at polling stations involving party figures such as Giorgos Kouttoukis and Kyriakos Mavronikolas.

To address these issues, a five-member committee on conferences and registry cleaning was established following an Extraordinary Pan-Cypriot Conference held on July 5, 2026. This committee is tasked with reviewing member deletions and organizing upcoming internal processes. It has scheduled the Statutory Conference for October 11, 2026, and the Electoral Conference for December 13, 2026. Although these dates were announced by committee member Nikos Nikolaidis, the process has faced resistance from segments of the party leadership.

In a move to establish her new leadership authority, Sofia Christodoulou Makri has arranged an official meeting with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. The discussion is scheduled to take place at the Presidential Palace on September 11, 2026, at 12:00, focusing on the future political relationship and cooperation between the party and the government.
