New EDEK president Sofia Christodoulou Makri begins political contacts

Following her recent election as president of the historic EDEK party, Sofia Christodoulou Makri has initiated a series of high-level political meetings. On September 11, 2026, she met with President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace and with House President Annita Demetriou to discuss the party's future role, the Cyprus problem, and potential cooperation strategies, despite EDEK currently lacking parliamentary representation.

The leadership transition comes amidst internal organizational challenges, including ongoing disputes regarding membership registry updates and preparations for upcoming statutory and electoral congresses. A five-member committee, established following an extraordinary congress on July 5, has scheduled the party's statutory congress for October 11 and its electoral congress for December 13 to resolve internal governance issues. During the meetings, both President Christodoulides and Annita Demetriou expressed support for the party, emphasizing that EDEK remains a vital political pillar regardless of its current absence from the legislature.

Makri has signaled a shift toward focusing on social, labor, and daily issues to regain public trust. While the meetings served as an initial effort to redefine the party's stance, Makri has clarified that specific decisions regarding future government collaboration remain subject to further internal party consensus.
