Sophia Christodoulou Makri assumes EDEK leadership and begins institutional meetings

Following her election as the new president of the EDEK party, Sophia Christodoulou Makri has initiated a series of formal contacts with the Cypriot political leadership. On September 11, 2026, she held her first official meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace, followed by a discussion with the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Dimitriou. The agenda covered the current political situation, social issues such as housing and energy costs, and the future cooperation between the party and the government.

The leadership transition follows a period of internal volatility within EDEK, characterized by disputes over the membership registry and the scheduling of party conferences. A five-member committee, established by a July 5 extraordinary congress, has scheduled the Statutory Congress for October 11 and the Electoral Congress for December 13. Previous internal friction included disagreements regarding election procedures and allegations concerning the transparency of central committee protocols.

Moving forward, Christodoulou Makri intends to continue consultations with other party leaders, including Nicolas Papadopoulos of DIKO. The new leadership aims to consolidate its position and define its administrative stance while addressing internal dissatisfaction regarding previous government cabinet reshuffles.
