Omonia Nicosia nears deal to sign David Akintola
Omonia Nicosia is in the final stages of signing 30-year-old Nigerian winger David Akintola before the transfer deadline. The player has arrived in Cyprus to undergo mandatory medical examinations ahead of completing his move to the club. Akintola, a personal choice of coach Henning Berg, previously played for Omonia on loan during the 2019-2020 season. His recent career path includes stints in Turkey with Hatayspor, Adana Demirspor, and Rizespor, followed by a move to English side Hull City, where he contributed to their promotion to the Premier League last season. During his time at Hull, he made 20 appearances in the Championship and one in the EFL Cup.
While the transfer provides Omonia with a reinforcement for domestic league and cup competitions, the player will not be eligible for the European League Phase as the squad lists have already been submitted. Omonia officials note that he remains match-fit, having participated in Hull City's recent preparations and playing 81 minutes in an EFL Cup match against Stoke City on August 25. Sources vary on his age, with some reporting him as 29 and others as 30, though his footballing experience and familiarity with the club are highlighted as key assets for his return to Nicosia.
