Akel general secretary outlines criteria for 2028 presidential candidacy

During a centennial celebration for the party in Nicosia, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou initiated the party's formal discussion regarding the 2028 presidential elections. Moving away from naming potential candidates, Stefanou instead defined three exclusionary criteria: the party will reject any candidate who does not prioritize a Cyprus settlement on the agreed framework, supports the current governance model that emphasizes numerical results over citizen needs, or maintains links to the corruption associated with the Anastasiades and Christodoulides administrations.

Stefanou emphasized the goal of fostering a broad social movement for "progressive change" to challenge the existing political landscape. While internal discussions are in their infancy, sources indicate that party base groups will begin evaluating potential candidates and profiles throughout September, with a second round of discussions planned before the end of the year. Although Andreas Mavroyiannis attended the event and is considered a potential candidate, no official nominations have been finalized. The leadership is deliberately pacing its strategy to capitalize on perceived divisions within the governing right-wing bloc, aiming for a more calculated approach compared to previous cycles.
