Drone attacks target energy infrastructure in Novorossiysk and Novy Urengoy

On September 9, 2026, Russian energy infrastructure faced simultaneous drone attacks in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk and the northern city of Novy Urengoy. In Novorossiysk, a drone strike ignited a fire at a fuel terminal, causing damage to nearby commercial facilities and residential areas. According to industry sources, the affected tank held approximately 37,000 cubic meters of petroleum products. The local mayor, Andrey Kravchenko, confirmed the presence of drone debris throughout the area, noting that shipping operations face further delays and tanker shortages due to persistent targeting of the port.

Simultaneously, a separate industrial facility in Novy Urengoy, located in the Yamal-Nenets region, was hit by a drone. Regional governor Dmitry Artyukhov reported the incident, marking the first successful long-range strike on gas infrastructure in this remote area of Western Siberia, situated roughly 3,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. While no casualties were reported, the extent of the damage remains under assessment. Gazprom has not commented on the event. These strikes represent a significant escalation in reach, as previous attacks were largely concentrated in border regions, while the current incidents disrupt both oil export logistics and critical gas extraction hubs.
