Escalation in drone strikes between Russia and Ukraine

Between September 9 and September 11, 2026, both Russia and Ukraine engaged in a series of long-range and cross-border drone attacks targeting critical infrastructure and civilian areas. Ukrainian forces claimed to have conducted deep-strike operations against two major gas processing facilities in the Yamal-Nenets region of Western Siberia, approximately 3,000 kilometers from the border, including sites in Novy Urengoy and the Purovsky district. Russian authorities confirmed an attack in Novy Urengoy, stating that debris from an intercepted drone caused a fire at an industrial facility, while simultaneously reporting an oil terminal fire in Novorossiysk caused by similar drone activity.

The conflict intensified within Ukrainian territory as well. A Russian drone strike on a shopping center in Pavlohrad resulted in at least five deaths and 67 injuries, including children. Additional attacks occurred in Sumy, where two people died, and in Kyiv and Mykolaiv, where civilian and industrial infrastructure sustained damage, resulting in multiple casualties. Russian officials justified the strikes on Mykolaiv and Chornomorsk by claiming they targeted military installations and drone depots. These events follow a pattern of increasing disruption to energy exports and ongoing strikes on civilian centers on both sides of the border.
