Escalation in drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine

Between September 9 and 12, 2026, Russia and Ukraine significantly intensified mutual drone attacks, targeting critical energy, industrial, and civilian infrastructure. Ukraine claimed responsibility for deep-strike operations against Russian gas processing plants in the Yamal-Nenets region, including Novy Urengoy and the Purovsky district, as well as industrial facilities in Perm, Tula, Tolyatti, Samara, Saratov, and Volgograd. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated these strikes aim to cripple the Russian economy and its capacity to sustain the war.

Simultaneously, Russian forces launched large-scale drone and air strikes across Ukraine, hitting civilian infrastructure in Kyiv, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, and a shopping center in Pavlohrad, where at least five people were killed and 67 injured. In Kyiv, strikes on fuel stations resulted in at least two deaths and multiple injuries. Russian authorities reported casualties and damage in border regions such as Belgorod, as well as the Sochi resort area. Moscow denied major damage from Ukrainian long-range strikes, asserting that most drones were intercepted, while acknowledging fires at some industrial sites. The ongoing conflict continues to disrupt regional fuel supplies and transit logistics amid failed diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire.
