Spanish authorities on high alert following mass Ceuta border crossing

Spanish authorities are currently on high alert due to online calls for a new mass mobilization on September 20, aimed at breaching the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. These tensions follow the crisis of July 30 and 31, during which over 70,000 migrants entered the territory. Social media campaigns, including those on WhatsApp and Facebook, have been circulating messages in Moroccan Arabic inciting a "march of rage" against Spanish territories.

Newly declassified documents from the Spanish government reveal that the National Intelligence Centre (CNI) had warned Moroccan authorities and the government of Ceuta as early as July 29 about the impending mass entry attempt. The warnings cited online groups with approximately 180,000 followers planning to scale fences or swim into the enclave. While Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez maintains that the scale of the crisis was unpredictable, these disclosures have triggered a significant political confrontation in Madrid.

In response to the ongoing situation, the European Union has provided Spain with €114.7 million in emergency funding to assist with border management and the processing of migrants. Security services are currently working to determine whether the upcoming September 20 calls represent a coordinated effort or simply an online campaign, as the nation remains prepared for further border activity.
