Cyprus commemorates the 760 missing persons from the 1974 conflict

On the occasion of International Day of the Disappeared, Cyprus Presidential Commissioner Marios Chartsiotis announced that 760 individuals remain missing without identification 52 years after the 1974 conflict. Speaking at an event in Larnaca organized by the Cyprus Research Center, Chartsiotis reaffirmed that resolving the fate of the missing is a paramount humanitarian and national duty for the state that does not expire over time.

To address the ongoing crisis, the government is launching new initiatives focused on upgrading forensic infrastructure and enhancing genetic testing protocols. Furthermore, officials are improving communication channels to support the families of the missing. A critical component of this strategy remains the pressure for access to Turkish military archives, which is considered essential for uncovering the truth regarding the victims' fates.

While efforts to locate and identify remains continue, the administration emphasized that the issue must not suffer from political fatigue. Authorities remain committed to pursuing all available avenues to provide answers to the hundreds of families still awaiting news about their loved ones, maintaining that the search for the missing remains a top national priority decades after the tragedy.
