Reduction of police protection for former Cypriot officials

The Cypriot government has moved to reduce the police protection detail assigned to several former state officials. The decision affects former House Presidents Yiannakis Omirou and Demetris Syllouris, as well as former Presidents of the Republic, George Vasiliou and the late Demetris Christofias.

Rather than a direct Cabinet-level decision, the responsibility for implementing these reductions has been delegated to the Minister of Justice, Marios Hartsiotis (referred to in reports as Phytiris). This process will be guided by formal recommendations provided by the Cyprus Police, aimed at optimizing security resources. This change comes as part of a broader review of the state's logistical and security expenditures, specifically targeting the size of security details provided to retired political figures who historically received lifetime police escorts.

The initiative follows growing public and political discourse regarding the necessity of maintaining extensive police protection for former officials. Further steps are expected to be taken by the Ministry of Justice to finalize the exact number of officers to be withdrawn, ensuring that the adjusted security measures align with current threat assessments and institutional protocols.
