Investigation into the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis

Renowned Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the age of 54. The singer suffered a cardiac arrest while undergoing a scheduled plasmapheresis treatment at a private clinic in Kolonaki. Upon arrival at the Elpis Hospital at 16:45, he had no pulse or spontaneous breathing; despite resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at 17:40.

Following the incident, Greek authorities have initiated an investigation into the clinic's operating status, licensing, and medical practices. The physician who owns the clinic and his wife, also a doctor, were detained for questioning and released shortly before midnight. Conflicting reports emerged during the investigation, with the physician reportedly claiming his wife was responsible for the patient's treatment.
