Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis dies at 54 following medical incident in Kolonaki

Popular Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the age of 54, after suffering a cardiac arrest during a scheduled plasmapheresis treatment at a private clinic in the Kolonaki district of Athens. According to reports, the singer experienced intense chest pain shortly after a venous catheter was inserted, prompting staff to initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Despite subsequent efforts by emergency responders from the National Centre for Emergency Care and staff at Elpis Hospital, Mazonakis could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at 17:40.

Authorities have launched an extensive investigation into the incident, focusing on the legitimacy of the clinic's operations and whether it possessed the required licenses to perform such specialized blood-cleansing procedures. The facility's owners, an internist and his wife, a gynecologist, were questioned by the police and subsequently released.
