Trial of suspended Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos resumes

The trial of the suspended mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, resumed on September 10 at the Permanent Criminal Court in Paphos. The proceedings, which were adjourned in late July after the prosecution failed to secure the attendance of necessary witnesses, are being conducted behind closed doors to protect the sensitivity of the case. The prosecution is led by senior advocate of the Republic, Mikaella Pashiardi, and involves approximately 20 witnesses, with over ten having testified so far, including police investigators, experts, and colleagues from the complainant's workplace.

Phedonos faces five serious criminal charges, including rape, indecent assault of a woman, assault causing actual bodily harm, and the administration of intoxicating substances. The defendant has pleaded not guilty to all charges. A critical component of the upcoming proceedings is the testimony of the complainant; prosecutors are reportedly seeking to have her testify via video link from a separate room within the courthouse to ensure her comfort. Once the prosecution completes its witness list, the court will evaluate if there is a prima facie case against the defendant before the defense begins its testimony.
